Cook Islands announces shark sanctuary, which created the largest in the world combined with the neighbouring islands' similar move.

Christmas came early this year for the sharks with the news that Cook Islands declared their 1.9 million km² exclusive economic zone as a shark sanctuary.

Combined with their island neighbors’ earlier similar declaration, the total sanctuary area in the Pacific Ocean now totaled to 6.7 million km², nearly the size of Australia.

This move makes it illegal to fish for sharks, sale or possession of shark products. A timely move for the endangered species.

All of us at Downbelow are overjoyed on hearing this news as we are deeply committed and passionate about marine conservation and total well-being of our environment.

We are proud to involve ourselves with Project AWARE Foundation causes. We try to get as many individuals involved in our aim to spread awareness through regularly conducted clean-up events.
