2 Islands, 1 Resort – Diving & Snorkeling Delight
Mataking Island lies in the Celebes Sea about 40 minutes east of Semporna on Sabah’s east coast.
1 resort, 2 islands, Mataking Island Resort is on Mataking Besar, or Big Mataking.
Separated from the larger island by a sandbank, which is walkable during low tide, is Mataking Kecil (Small Mataking), a tiny, picturesque outcrop covered with jungle.
The island is, depending on the prevailing weather, 1 – 2 hours away from Sipadan, which makes it a bit of a distance if Sipadan is your goal, but bordering a marine park, Mataking holds its own when it comes to snorkeling and diving.
On the path less trodden, Mataking offers something for holiday makers, spa lovers, divers and honeymooners alike in a peaceful, tranquil setting.

Mataking Island Resort Activities
Considering the relatively small size of Mataking Island, it actually has a surprisingly long list of things to occupy yourself with, including physical activities such as diving, snorkeling, jogging and an island tour.
For the more creative there’s arts & crafts such as painting, dancing and cooking classes, and to relax after it all, the ever popular Jamu Spa from where to get your fix of massage and spa treatments.
At night the fun doesn’t set, with a night walk in the jungle and spying the turtles who come ashore to lay eggs during mating season.
There’s also the popular BBQ at the Sunset Bar, cultural performances and, during festive seasons, a disco boogie, or the island guitarist to serenade you at other times.
Diving Mataking Island
Of course, what better activity to take part in on an island like Mataking than diving?
There are over 30 dive sites to explore around Mataking Island and the surrounding islands of Timba-timba and Pandanan, and in the Sakaran Marine Park Bohayan Island, Kalapuan Island, Baturua Island and Mantabuan Island.
In the shallows of Kalapuan the life is as impressive as in the deep, and at Mataking itself divers can also get a mix of wall and slope diving, providing a one-stop spot for pelagic and macro action.
Schools of Spanish mackerel, trevally and barracuda are plentiful, with ribbon eels, giant clams, eagle rays, giant frogfish and mandarin fish for variation.
Colorful species of shrimps will captivate the attention of underwater photographers when the prize of all prizes, the rare pygmy seahorses, frustrate them.
Night diving on the house reef is spectacular when an entirely different spectrum of critter awakes to pose for photographers and prance for casual onlookers.
Trips to Sipadan can also be arranged in the form of a day trip with 3 boat dives. The boat trip to Sipadan can take from 60 – 90 minutes depending on the sea conditions.
