Downbelow and Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, joined forces to raise a RM 1500 donation for the Project AWARE Foundation while conducting a beach cleanup.
The wonderful team of volunteers consisting of Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, Downbelow staff, Sabah Parks, Downbelow’s Go Pro Interns and a couple of Danish adventurers, spent the day cleaning the beaches around Gaya Island.
PADI Course Director and Downbelow MD, Richard Swann, gave a talk highlighting the importance of working together to tackle the immense global problem of marine debris. Hyatt Regency Kinabalu’s General Manager, Arifin Darmawan, lead by example, attending the beach cleanup and giving thanks to all for their participation.
99% of the rubbish collected today was plastic of some kind and all of it has been driven by wind and tide to Gaya island from elsewhere. Attitudes must change to stop the problem at the root, so please take time to consider: do you need that additional plastic bag or bottle?
