We found and removed yet another discarded fishing net in the TAR Park this month, marking the 2nd net in November.
The dive crew discovered the gill net heavily entangled on Ribbon Reef, one of the healthiest reefs in the TAR Park, Kota Kinabalu, so Downbelow’s Net Removal Team was compelled to act swiftly.
Professional Scuba Intern and IDC Candidate Shevy was appointed to give the dive briefing, gaining valuable experience for his future professional diving career.
Particularly difficult mission, the situation required multiple dives as a slow and careful approach was required to remove the net from the delicate, healthy corals.
After the successful removal the crew, in an ironic twist, recycled the net and made net-bags, which will be used for marine debris and rubbish collections during future Project AWARE events.
