Our very recent illegal fishing net removal dives have spurred the need for another coral planting project so our resident Platinum PADI Course Director Richard Swann conducts an educational session on coral planting!
Our latest PADI Divemaster Trainees who are part of our “Work for a Career” program have an awesome opportunity to learn the benefits of coral planting and Richard will show the new members of the island team how to plant coral.
During the net removal dives, broken pieces of coral are collected and kept in a saltwater environment temporarily at our premier PADI 5 Star IDC Dive Centre. Beforehand, Richard demonstrates methods to anchor the coral on to a similar substrate as the calcium carbonate of the reef and the boys try it out for themselves. The ‘corals’ will then be dispersed close to the edge of the reef because the proximity to healthy corals can encourage the damaged coral to co-exist and flourish itself!
